Our Social Impact Mission
WHAT WE DO AND WHY WE DO IT.
Misión Surf México is a community orientated, sports project, working to equip children and adults with the knowledge, techniques and fitness to know how to swim and surf with confidence. The project also uses these sports as a form of therapy for traumatised children. For physical, psychological and social development, swimming and surfing provide an avenue that can empower disadvantaged children.
Misión Surf, under the umbrella of Misión México, is situated in an impoverished location where after school sports activities are non-existent. Children and adolescents alike do not have a constructive means to occupy their free time, therefore are more susceptible to destructive influences, such as drugs and alcohol abuse, which inevitably leads to negative behaviour and/or criminal activity. By providing an opportunity for the local community to become engaged in holistic activities such as our sports projects, their children, youth and also the adults have an opportunity to learn valuable life lessons through team
and individual involvement.
Misión Surf México introduces disadvantaged children to surfing as a lifestyle. It helps them find confidence in themselves and a belief that they can achieve anything they want to. The children love surfing and recognise the impact it has on their lives.
Beach/swimming/surf education is minimal in Mexican communities, and initially when Pam and Alan arrived, the children at Misión México didn’t know how to swim. With Alan and Pam’s inherent knowledge of living at the beach, they taught, and continue to teach, the children to swim and surf. Surfing is a previously unknown activity in the area, yet it has become a uniquely transforming sporting activity for these children
